Treatment Alternatives
There are several treatment options available today for people with excessive underarm sweat. These options vary in terms of efficacy, duration of effect, cost and associated risk / invasiveness.
The miraDry Procedure uses the only medical device that provides a truly lasting, non-invasive, and effective solution to reduce excessive underarm sweating. The miraDry System utilizes clinically proven technology to eliminate the sweat glands non-invasively. Published scientific research demonstrates that sweat glands do not come back or regenerate once they have been eliminated. Because the sweat glands do not regenerate, you can expect dramatic and lasting results.
Other options:
- Prescription antiperspirants can be effective in mild cases of axillary hyperhidrosis and are often recommended as a first line treatment. Antiperspirants work by plugging sweat ducts, which reduces the amount of sweat that reaches the skin’s surface. Often ineffective in more severe cases, prescription antiperspirants may cause uncomfortable skin irritation.
- Botulinum toxin type A can provide temporary relief of excessive underarm sweat by blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that activate the sweat glands. It is injected into the underarm area, requiring multiple injections. While the injections are overall quite effective, your symptoms will return gradually, requiring additional injections. In a clinical study involving 322 patients with severe underarm sweating, 50% of the patients had treatment duration of 201 days (6.7 months).1
- Surgery is typically considered as a last resort, reserved for severe hyperhidrosis cases that have not responded to other treatment options. Surgical procedures either remove the sweat glands or cut the nerves that serve the sweat glands. Because there are inherent risks associated with any surgical procedure, surgery is typically considered after other options have been tried.
